Denali State Park, not to be confused with it’s more famous relation, is located adjascent to Denali National Park off the Parks Highway. The park is just over 325,000 acres and boasts some of the best vantage points for viewing Denali.
The park is about 150 miles north of Anchorage making this area a great choice if you don’t have a lot of time to spend travelling to the start of your trek. You can depart Anchorage and be hiking in the park later that same day!
From the alpine tundra of Curry Ridge to the river bottoms of the Tokositna River, the park's varied landscape is home to a variety of wildlife. Moose, grizzly and black bears, are found throughout the park. Though rarely seen, there are wolves throughout much of the park. Caribou occasionally corss the park's northern end. Smaller, elusive residents include lynx, coyote, red fox, snowshoe hare, land otter, and flying and red squirrel. Ermine, marten, mink and wolverine can be seen. Wet areas are habitat for muskrat and beaver which are frequently spotted. Porcupine will be happy to browse through your food and gear in search of salt. Great area for the less experienced looking for a more moderate Alaska hiking trip.
Shorter, closer to Anchorage - ridge walk with awesome Denali views! Great for those not looking for a hard core Alaska trip. We do backpack most days on this trip but once we hump it up the ridge the terrain eases back a bit. Good for fit beginners.
